Special education needs have increased dramatically in the last few years. More and more students with Autism are entering the school system and it is becoming increasingly difficult to support these students the way they deserve to be supported. I would like to see policies and funding examined to ensure that these students are receiving the quality of education that they are entitled to receive.
As we have learned over the past 3 years, mental health is the #1 medical issue in the world. The #1 reason to visit your general physician. The #1 prescription that all pharmacies fill is for anxiety or depression. As somebody who has Autism (Aspergers) I find that there are far too many people who do not know how broad Autism can be and how very different it can be from person to person.
Before we go and come up with solutions, one of the biggest things I think we really need to do is education about ABOUT Autism.
The more informed a voter, the better choice they can make.
There is a growing crisis in Ontario for families raising individuals with Autism. Once children reach the age of 18 years, many of the supports that they have in place are removed. I implore the provincial government to implement a direct funding policy for families of adults with autism who are continuing to support them in their homes. Public institutions should be encouraged to hire people with disabilities, particularly autistic adults who are able to work. They have a lot to offer if given the chance to do so.
Government needs to play a different role in regulating the Pharmaceutical Industry Young people today are brought into our mental health system by hundreds; the first is entry into elementary school.
