We should be allowing recreational marijuana and taxing it like alcohol, as it is safer and less addictive than alcohol or tobacco. We should also be removing our primitive laws on marijuana and putting the enforcement money into addiction programs for harsh drugs, health care and education. WAKE UP ONTARIO!!
All Ontarians should have a government run drug plan that kicks in once they surpass a certain portion of spending that is determined based on income. It will allow for catastrophic drug coverage for expensive drugs but also ensure that the public pays a portion based on their income. Ontario is one of the only provinces with no universal drug plan.
CBC Radio One today featured the growing global shortage of generic drugs (see CBC WhIte Coat, Black Arts website). There are a number of reasons for the shortfall, but perhaps the most obvious is that companies don't particularly want to manufacture certain drugs as there is little profit in it for them. Marijuana should be legal, other drugs should be banned from production and smuggling into Canada and be discouraged but not punished for their use. The drug addicts should be seen as patients and not criminals. It should be viewed as an illness. As a recent patient for mental health issues I took part in group therapy at Centenary Hospital in Scarborough. One of features of the therapy was a talk given to the patients by a nutritionist.
