Leona Dombrowski promised provincial funding for the Tobacco Transition Program. The Federal government provided their 60%, the province reneged on their 40%. The tobacco belt has suffered greatly due to the lack of transition into new ventures. The counties of Elgin, Haldimand-Norfolk, Brant, Oxford and Middlesex need to have those tobacco jobs replaced. Excise taxes are typically based on the volume or quantity of the product rather than the value, resulting in an effective decrease in tax revenue if held constant over time.
I'd like to see all ashtrays removed. We are increasing air pollution in local zones instead of distributing ground pollution. One directs cancer at building residents, the alternative looks bad. Perhaps it's time we see the poison on the ground that we are ingesting in our air.
