Many people say that some folks are just "apathetic" and have zero interest in participating fully in politics and do not care what is happening. This couldn't be further from the truth. People do want to actively participate but do not know where to go, who to talk to and how to be engaged. This program would be solely for women living with serious and persistent mental illness who live in the community but require 24/7 staff support and would like to live within a congregate environment. Being suitably housed would be a prime factor in their recovery, as well as, lessen time spent in hospital due to illness. Individuals living with serious and persistent mental illness are more often than not, on many anti-psychotic prescriptions that cause weight gain and major changes in appetite. Many of these individuals become diagnosed with diabetes and are not aware of the impact it causes on their body.
There needs to be widespread education from hospitals, community service agencies, family members, schools, etc.
In an effort to be transparent and in light of various tragedies that have occurred, there needs to be an independent investigation process when complaints are made within this sector.
It is now the 21st century and Ontario remains to be the only province where this is not an option.
