Accommodation of students with disabilities is one of the most pressing challenges facing our school boards and post-secondary education providers. The current system is based on legislative and common-law requirements that are often confusing for students and families to access and understand.
This proposal seeks to implement an accessibility standards for education providers across Ontario, including the creation of an office or officer to assist those living with disabilities, including mental health challenges. This #AccessEd office would be responsible for implementing the accessibility standard created by the Ontario government, whether it be more investments in infrastructure such as ramps and elevators, or individualized accommodation plans. Some schools have this type of office already, and it would be fantastic to ensure that these types of services are mandated province-wide.
