Affordable Cost of Living

Free Parking at Ontario Hospitals

The Ontario Liberal Party should commit to making parking at all Ontario hospitals free of charge for patients, visitors and staff.

Parking charges at Ontario hospitals cost

on average $2.50 for each half an hour and $15 per day. I believe that this places an unfair and unnecessary burden on families, patients and even hospital staff who do not always have their parking validated as employees of the hospital. This is especially true for low wage hospital staff such as cleaners and security guards.

Hospital parking charges are a disgraceful tax on illnesses and injuries.

Our hospitals are struggling from underfunding at the hands of successive Conservative and Liberal provincial governments, but the gap should not be filled by charging sick patients, anxious relatives and already hard pressed hospital staff for an essential service.

Hospital parking charges should not be used to cover budget shortfalls to begin with.

If Ontario's hospitals need to cover budget shortfalls then perhaps they should seriously consider reducing their grossly bloated management structures (many hospital directors and managers earn well over $100,000 per year) - instead of laying off front line staff such as nurses, orderlies, personal support workers, physiotherapists, diagnostic technicians, security guards, cleaners, food preperation workers, administration staff, ect; and balancing the books on the backs of sick patience and anxious relatives.
