Improve the representation of First Nations, Métis Nation & Inuit peoples, all Indigenous people on jury roll, jury panel, jury

TITLE:

Improve the representation of First Nations, Métis Nation & Inuit peoples, all Indigenous people on jury roll, jury panel, jury selection with respect to criminal trials, civil trials and Coroner’s inquests.

Idea is good, here's one possible solution & rationale.

Always more than one solution!

What's your solution to the GOAL?

One possible solution

Create, maintain a voluntary & confidential online Indigenous jury duty application form on the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario website.

From this database the annual jury selection process in Ontario can be complemented with Métis, Inuit, First Nations, all Indigenous peoples.

Team

Métis, Inuit, First Nations, all Indigenous peoples & Attorney General of Ontario.

How we could measure success?

Indigenous peoples on the database increases over time.

Indigenous peoples on the database are actually selected to serve on criminal trials, civil trials and Coroner’s inquests.

Who would benefit or be impacted?

How would it make people's lives easier?

Indigenous, non-indigenous peoples, Ontario court and justice system would benefit!

To be judged by your peers or your equals is a guaranteed basic right of all citizens.

Indigenous peoples would bring a unique cross-cultural sensitivity to the Ontario Justice System.

Trials or inquests may involve missing and murdered Indigenous women, Indigenous rights, environmental issues and other Indigenous specific issues and challenges.

Maybe no Indigenous specific issue, but the perspective of Indigenous values, culture, traditional knowledge, respect for land, air, water, animal & plant life, brings essential Indigenous perspectives to the Justice System.

Nation to Government enhanced relationships.

Other Considerations

There is an acute over-representation of Indigenous peoples incarcerated in our correctional systems.

When Indigenous peoples are defending themselves in the Ontario court system, they should be judged by a jury of their peers.

When there are issues of Indigenous significance, need inclusivity, namely Indigenous perspectives.

Indigenous peoples as judges, lawyers, bailiffs, paralegals, court clerks, court reporters, court interpreters, etc, but must also be represented on EVERY jury and inquest dealing with Indigenous peoples AND non-Indigenous people.

Indigenous peoples, as a citizen of an Indigenous Nation & Canada & as an Ontario resident get to judge all defendants and issues, this is their right
