Tougher Provincial Gun Control

While gun control in Canada is largely regulated by the Government of Canada by way of the Criminal Code of Canada -
I believe that the Province of Ontario could and should be doing more to curb gun violence which is on the rise in this province.

No one can legislate human folly. But if we can take action to prevent such events, we should, even with the limited tools accorded to the provinces where criminal justice is... more »

Integrate VIA Rail corridor services with GO Transit

Given that both VIA Rail and GO Transit are entirely taxpayer-funded, they should be working as a single system, using one ticketing infrastructure and coordinating their rail networks. VIA offers a wonderful service, but tickets are far too expensive and inflexible, and the schedule too irregular, to be of any use for regular travellers. This means instead that people are often forced to drive when they could easily... more »

Integrate the planning of all transportation in southern Ontario

Most major regions fully integrate the planning of public transit with other forms of transportation, and we need to adopt this in Ontario. The recent Metrolinx draft regional transportation plan includes an appendix giving an overview of different types of governance, highlighting models such as Transport for London, but did not give a specific recommendation. The Toronto Board of Trade has also recommended expanding... more »

Tax credit for volunteering

Volunteer hours beyond a reasonable annual average could be provided tax credit. This would make cost of public works such as hospitals, seniors homes, municipalities get available work force benefit them as well. Churches and political causes can be exempt from this for calculating hours. Say hour put in beyond about 80 hours a year could be credited for a reasonable tax break. Seniors, new immigrants, periods of jobless... more »

Purchase a police helicopter for Toronto

The Government of Ontario should purchase of a police helicopter for the Toronto Police Service (TPS). I believe its absurd that the City of Toronto with a population of over 3 million people does not have its own police helicopter, and
has had to request to assistance of the one currently owned and operated by
York Regional Police on countless occasions. York Region as a whole has
a population of just over 1 million... more »

Stop the plastic problem!

Enact legislation and regulations that limit or eliminate single-use plastic and ensure that even recyclable plastic does not end up in our beautiful lakes, rivers and oceans. Companies need to recognize and promote alternative products and we as consumers need to limit use of plastic that is destroying the mother earth!

Homes

Homes

We will develop an affordable housing strategy, referring to not only the poor, but to people who find their homes are no longer appropriate to their needs, particularly the aging, but who find that their incomes together with the proceeds from sale of their current homes, will is not adequate to relocate to more appropriate residence.

Transit

The idea of sustainable communities should recognize that we are putting much too much effort into helping people travel great distances frequently in order to get to work, school, shopping, and entertainment and recreation. Metrolinx predicts increasing distances to be travelled by people to and from the GTA, and MTO predicts increasing travel on the highways. Roads widen, taking up more land and vehicular traffic... more »

Allowing the sale of Ontario Fruit wines at farmers' markets - withdrawn - Already implemented

Idea withdrawn - Already implemented October 2016 - Ontario produces some of the best fruit wines in the world. The best ones are on the menu of the Legislative dining room at Queen's Park. A bill to allow the sale of Ontario fruit wines at farmers' markets passed first and second reading in 2008, but was never brought for third reading and law. In the meantime the sale of VQA wines, made from grapes, is now allowed at... more »

Deposit for Return: Half of Plastic Bottles Sold in Ontario End Up in Landfill

Of the 3 billion plastic bottles sold in Ontario 1.5 billion end up in landfill. Ontario's performance is very poor in comparison with other provinces which are succeeding to divert more plastic from landfill with a deposit for return program. Ontario should do the same and use the funds generated to finance maintaining the health of the Great Lakes and other waterways.

Plastics are dangerous for our health because they... more »

Long-term Care Facilities

The government must take a greater role in providing nursing home and other long-term care facilities for needy seniors. Why has this aspect of health care been allocated to the private sector? Currently too many hospital beds are being occupied by persons who don't need that level of care, but there is a shortage of beds in NH & LTC facilities.

Encourage companies to allow employees to have flexible working arrangements when possible (similar to UK)

To encourage better quality of life due to reduced commutes, more time with families, less stress on the environment from traffic, and partially avoid the need to continue to build more highways and upgrading transit. Many companies have the technical capability to allow flexible arrangements but do not offer them due to traditional thinking. There is a program in the UK that does this now. https://www.gov.uk/flexible-working... more »

Go train east

How does the GO train stop in Oshawa. The routes north and west are way longer. Thousands drive in from Cobourg and port hope every day because there is only one Via rail in the morning that gets downtown around 10am. That’s not working hours. The people to the east are severely short in their GO service compared to the rest of the Greater GTA.

Teaching good behaviour

I have an important observation and some sound advice: In quite a few constituencies, the nomination contest gets sickening with a focus on finding contestant's faults. Generally speaking, people want to rise by pulling down others which is not a fair game - those who pull down others are weak candidates and they can not win on their own strength. I strongly suggest that the Liberal Party should first teach the contestants... more »
