Inclusive and Just Society

Although the province is growing, not everyone feels included in that increased prosperity. The Ontario Liberal Party believes that everyone should have the opportunity to realize their full potential in an inclusive and just society. We still have lots of work to do to ensure everyone has a fair chance in our society. So we need you best ideas.

Living wage for those after 18 years old unable to find work

Since citizens in Canada and the Western world are heading towards a situation where jobs are unable to be found for the average person, I think that it is incumbent upon government to fill in the gaps for anyone over the age of 18 to receive wages and living wages if they lose work, are unable to find work after a given time, and / or if people are unable to receive benefits from jobs to live. By cutting out the middle ...more »

A NEW PAID STATUTORY PROVINCIAL HOLIDAY IN JUNE

As you may be aware, the Province of Ontario currently enjoys five nationwide and four provincial paid statutory holidays. While most Ontarians enjoy these nine statutory holidays, there is a growing consensus that they deserve at least one more such statutory holiday, especially in light of the fact that other Canadian provinces and territories enjoy a total of ten statutory holidays. British Columbia, New Brunswick, ...more »

Make it mandatory for all Ontario correctional workers to wear body cameras

Body cameras have emerged across North America as a popular means of improving correctional worker accountability as well as ensuring the safety of inmates, visitors and correctional workers alike. Advocates argue that video recordings of front line correctional worker interactions with their colleagues, inmates and visitors can provide a clearer picture of what happened in a controversial incident — such as alleged mistreatment ...more »

Protect the identity of all those charged with a crime and/or provincial offence - unless they are convicted

I believe that the Government of Ontario should immediately pass legislation which would prohibit any organ of the province and/or its municipalities (i.e., police departments, court systems, government bodies, ect.) from making the identity of anyone charged with a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada (i.e., murder, assault, theft, fraud, drug possession, ect.) and/or a provincial offense (i.e., speeding, drunk ...more »

Ensure that all future Ontario laws are fully Charter compliant

All Canadian laws passed by both the Parliament of Canada as well as the 10 Provincial and 3 Territorial Legislatures must comply with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as it is part of our constitution. Put simply, any given law - federal or provincial/territorial must ‘pass the Charter test’. However, this currently does not prevent Canada's Parliament and Legislatures from passing laws that are likely unconstitutional ...more »

Decriminalize Drunk Driving - Impose Roadside Penalties Instead

The Government of Ontario shouid pass legislation to empower all provincial and municipal police officers with the discretion as to whether to criminally charge those who blow over the legal limit during a roadside impaired breathalyzer test. This would effectively impose roadside administrative sanctions rather than criminal charges. This is the model that both Alberta and British Columbia currently utilize, with ...more »

Promote the Monarchy in Ontario

The role of the Crown is both legal and practical; it functions in Ontario in the same way it does in all of Canada's other provinces, being the centre of a constitutional construct in which the institutions of government acting under the sovereign's authority share the power of the whole. It is thus the foundation of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the province's government. The Canadian monarch—Queen ...more »

Abolish Victimless Crimes

A victimless crime is an illegal act that typically either directly involves only the perpetrator, or occurs between consenting adults; because it is consensual in nature, there is arguably no true victim. Examples of these types of crimes include possession of illegal drugs, prostitution and atypical sexual behavior (between fully consenting adults). While illegal drug possession and prostitution are largely federal ...more »

Real Rights for Ontario Workers

The Government of Ontario's priority shouid be to protect the interests of the working class, not the big corporations. Therefore the following policies should be implemented: a) Full Ontario Labour Code protection and workplace inspections for all domestic, agricultural and migrant workers. b) Ontario Labour Code amendments to protect and enhance the rights to organize in workplaces and company-wide, to bargain ...more »

Equality and Justice for Women

Ontario women today face a wide gender pay gap, misogynist violence, and a lack of social programmes to help advance economic equality and social justice. I believe that the Government of Ontario should: a) Establish a province wide public system of universal, affordable, quality child care. b) Restore funding to Ontario's women’s centres and programmes, and provide safe spaces to women and families escaping domestic ...more »

Justice for Ontario's Indigenous People

The Canadian state was established through the genocidal colonial theft of indigenous lands, including the unceded traditional indigenous territories of Ontario. During next year's election, I believe that the Government of Ontario should implement the following policies to help achieve true reconciliation and justice: a) Full recognition of inherent indigenous title to all unceded traditional territories. b) Provincial ...more »

An Ontario Provincial Anthem

I believe that the Government of Ontario shouid officially create a provincial anthem by way of inviting the public to submit and vote for suggestions online, create a shortlist based on the most popular lyrics and then holding a referendum to pick the winner from the aforementioned shortlist. "Alberta" is the official provincial anthem of Alberta, adopted in preparation for the province's centennial celebrations in ...more »
