Declare education an essential service

Education should be a basic human right for every Ontarian, not a bargaining chip for negotiation. The government took a huge step forward this year with the new Ontario Student Grant taking effect and making post-secondary education accessible to all, regardless of income. This is the next logical step forward to avoiding a public education crisis at every level, elementary, secondary and post-secondary. We need to ...more »

Birth to Five Early Literacy Initiative

Ontario’s Future Generation In order to have a prosperity in Ontario’s future, we must have a strong workforce and stable society. Craig Alexander, Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist of the Conference Board of Canada, says early childhood education is one of the best tools policy makers have at their disposal if they want to make a more equitable yet growing economy. Ontario has made great strides on early childhood ...more »

Strike limitations

Have mandatory standards while work stoppages are in effect so that students are not overly harmed. Such minimums could include content releases on schedule, email correspondence with students and financial assistance for all students.

Fund Technological Education Not Simply "Technology"

Currently a great deal of funding is being directed toward Technology funding for education. However, this funding is supposed to be used for both tech education and the inclusion of technology in schools, but boards are not directing this funding for tech education. There is a huge need to technological literate and skilled workers in our country, and the need is only going to increase. As tech teachers we are expected ...more »

Solve skills shortages - increase training and admissions instead of relying on immigration

Ontario spends a lot to educate our kids and anyone who wants to gets skills or education. Yet we seems to have shortages of certain skills or training that never get addressed - we do not have enough doctors, but there is no shortage of people who want to become doctors, instead the shortage is because of the lack of slots in medical degree programs and in hospital internships needed for a license. The federal immigration ...more »

Restore fairness, service quality and value-for-tax-dollars in community colleges and the Broader Public Service

The recently-ended colleges strike has highlighted a systemic problem in the Broader Public Service, which according to Statistics Canada in 2011 included more than 640,000 Ontario employees in health and social service institutions, universities, vocational and trade institutions and local school boards in addition to community colleges. While wholly or largely taxpayer-funded, these myriad institutions each have their ...more »

Ontario; the province of innovation

Ontario has a responsibility to herself to ensure that the Province and its people are prepared for the future, to both embrace it and to shape it, through the development of an innovation society. Innovation in technology, or anything, cannot readily be proscribed but is instead the positive by-product of context and conditions. While society through its governments may create short bursts of research, development, ...more »

School Bus Tracking GPS System for Parents, Students, School Administration

How many times has a student missed their school bus ? Mom, dad, parent, guardian I need a ride to school, again. Or do they just stay home? Or walk? An app to track school bus would engage our social media savvy students to be aware of bus location, almost never miss a ride again. An app to track school bus would let school administration & parent/guardian know when a school trip bus was actually returning to school. ...more »

Student as Customer

There needs to be a cultural shift in our educational system to the student’s being the customer. Currently, at the post-secondary level the emphasis appears to be on "making money" and enhancing reputation at the expense of the students. Universities have become a business attracting more and more students with research being their primary objective. Students have suffered in terms of the quality of instruction with ...more »

Early education

The government is currently making a mess of the early childcare and education sector. In beefing up regulations in the licensed childcare area, the government is making it impossible for child care centre operators to provide affordable care. The problem is over-regulation, with rules and regulations for the smallest things, many of which do not impact the health or safety of the children (but are “nice to have”). As ...more »

Teacher Education

I think that we would see a great improvement in student learning if the requirements for becoming a teacher were more stringent. For a number of Faculties of Education, a university student must have only a C+ average in their university courses in order to be eligible to apply for a teaching degree. Once in the Faculty of Education, the student teachers are required to just pass their courses and complete their practical ...more »

Expanded French Language Training

Not having the ability to speak and work in French can be a major economic disadvantage in certain regions of the Province (East and North). We want to attract talent to these regions internationally, but also domestically from other provinces and from other, more English-speaking parts of Ontario- but subsidized French language training seems to be only available to new Canadians. An Aboriginal Tourist & Educational Agency that Invites the World to Learn & Experience Their Ancient Way of Life

I’d love to see the development of an “Aboriginal Tourist & Educational Agency” that invites people from around the world who want to learn about the Aboriginal people’s ancient way of life and culture through experiential education. All people, but particularly Ontario’s recent immigrants, school children and visitors, would be enlightened by a visit to Aboriginal historic sites, like Huronia, or Manitoulin Island, ...more »
